Web Extension Privacy Policy

This page covers the pyontan2 Web Extension for Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers. It sits alongside our main Privacy Policy, which covers your pyontan2 account and the dashboard.

The short version

The extension connects your browser to the pyontan2 desktop app running on your own computer. It sends nothing to us, to a server we run, or to anyone else. It has no analytics, no ads and no tracking, and it doesn't load or run code from the internet.

What the extension can see

• Twitch and YouTube chat. While translation is switched on, the extension reads the text of chat messages on Twitch and YouTube (including YouTube's live-chat frame) so they can be translated.
• Text you point at. If you turn on word lookup, then only while you hold your chosen modifier key (or middle mouse button), or when you right-click selected text and choose "Look up with pyontan2", the extension reads a short piece of text around your cursor — about 30 characters either side of it. Word lookup works only on websites you have explicitly allowed; you can review and remove them at any time on the extension's options page.
• It reads text inside ordinary text, search, email, URL and phone fields when you look up a word there, but never password fields, and it stays out of rich-text compose boxes.

It does not read your browsing history, cookies, passwords, form submissions, or pages you haven't enabled.

Where that text goes

Only to the pyontan2 desktop app, over a connection to 127.0.0.1 — your own machine — protected by a pairing code you copy from the app's settings. The desktop app doesn't accept connections from other computers. The extension makes no other network requests.

What the desktop app then does

This is the desktop app's behaviour rather than the extension's, but it's part of what happens to the text, so here it is plainly:

• Dictionary lookups run entirely on your computer.
• Translation uses the engine you choose in the desktop app's settings. The offline engine keeps everything on your computer. If you choose an online engine (DeepL, Google Translate, or an AI service you configure with your own key), the text to be translated is sent to that provider, under your own account and their terms.
• Pronunciation audio, if you ask for it, may be fetched from the audio source you've selected in the desktop app, which sends the word to that source.

We never receive any of this text. Nothing you translate or look up through the extension is stored on our servers.

What the extension stores

In your browser's local extension storage only (it isn't synced to your Google or Microsoft account): the app's port number, your pairing code, and your preferences — for example whether lookup is on, popup theme, and which sites you allowed. Removing the extension deletes all of it.

Why it asks for each permission

• Twitch and YouTube access — to read chat messages on those sites and show translations beside them.
• Optional access to other sites — requested only if you turn on word lookup, one site at a time, so it can show a dictionary popup there. Refusing it doesn't affect anything else.
• storage — to remember your settings and pairing code.
• alarms — a small timer that re-checks the connection to the desktop app.
• scripting — to add the lookup popup to the sites you allowed.
• contextMenus — the right-click "Look up with pyontan2" entry.
• activeTab — to show the result of a right-click lookup on the tab you're using.

Sharing and selling

We don't sell or rent data, we don't transfer it to third parties, and we don't use it for advertising, credit decisions or anything unrelated to the extension's single purpose: connecting your browser to your pyontan2 desktop app so Japanese text can be translated and looked up. The extension doesn't collect any data for us to share.

Your choices

• Turn the connection off from the extension's toolbar popup.
• Remove any allowed site from the options page, or revoke it in your browser's extension settings.
• Uninstall the extension to erase everything it stored.

Children

The extension isn't directed at children under 13.
